Literature as Encounter and Discovery, as exemplified by...
Literature as Encounter and Discovery, as exemplified by Hahn Moo-Sookââ¬â¢s novel Encounter The Italian explorer Columbus (1451-1506) discovered the American Continent in 1492. Of course, the unknown continent had existed even before he discovered it. But through Columbusââ¬â¢ discovery the unknown entity has emerged above the surface of the historical waters as a New World. Literature is like a voyage in search of a new continent, and the author is like Columbus. In the course of our lives, undiscovered subject matters abound like countless islands in the gigantic ocean of awareness. If perchance such a continent is not discovered through the eyes of a writer, it would sink to eternal oblivion. An author, therefore, is like an explorerâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Eventually, following his homecoming in golden robes as the secret royal inspector, Yi Mong-nyong rescues Chââ¬â¢unhyang, and the evil magistrate is dismissed and punished. The story has a happy ending, as their love is fulfilled. In contrast, the theme of the story of Simchââ¬â¢ong, based on a Buddhist legend, is about an opening of the eyes, i.e., a prototype of discovery. Simchââ¬â¢ong, the sixteen-year-old daughter of a blind man, sells herself to the boat people, who throw her into the ocean as a sacrificial lamb to the god of the sea for their protection. The filially pious daughter Simchââ¬â¢ong is resurrected and is betrothed to a king, who invites all the blind people of the country to his palace in hopes of finding among them his wifes father. The blind Simââ¬â¢s eyes open at the dramatic moment of his re-encounter with his daughter. In the Asian thinking based on the Buddhist belief, seeing with open eyes corresponds to being awake and seeing through the Truth. Modern Korean literature has inherited the spiritual legacy of the tales of Chunhang and Simchong. One notable example is Hahn Moo-Sookââ¬â¢s novel, Encounter1. The novelââ¬â¢s very title and plot correspond with the eternal themes of encounter and discovery represented by The Tale of Chââ¬â¢unhyang and The Tale of Simchong. Encounter is a rare novel in Korea, because it explores and probes

Tragic Flaw Free Essays
and The Flaw By Phanit Asavanamaung 10B Stories are told in many styles, through different medias; all which are to entertain or educate its audience. Christopher Booker, the author of the book ââ¬ËThe Seven Basic Plotsââ¬â¢, introduces the idea of the seven basics categories of any story told. The seven basic archetypes are Over Coming the Monster, Rags to Riches, The Quest, Voyage and Return, Comedy, Rebirth and Tragedy. We will write a custom essay sample on Tragic Flaw or any similar topic only for you Order Now Tragedy as one of the seven archetypes, are found in any type of stories; from the most recent published novel to the almost forgotten ancient myths of the earth. Tragedy is mostly used to describe when there is a death in the story, but which the term ââ¬Ëtragedyââ¬â¢ can also be used to describe when the character has fallen into a lower state. It is better defined when there is a downfall of the main character in the story. In all the stories which are categorized under tragedy, has one thing in common. It is that those characters have a tragic flaw; that influences the character to their downfall. The tragic flaw for each character is different. It is influenced by many factors, such as family and the environment they are exposed to. These influences lead to the death of the eternal love of Romeo and Juliet, or even the life of a school girl, Alaska; in Looking for Alaska. The tragic flaw of a character is influenced by many factors, leading to the characterââ¬â¢s downfall. The tragic flaw could be observed when there is a decision to be made, and the wrong choice is taken. The decision took, is influenced by the characters experience and also the condition that they are in. The experience of the character is from their past, about their families and their environment. This could result a tragic flaw to the character by making a scar to the character mentally. If the character was poorly treated in their childhood, or have experienced a traumatic event; this could cause a flaw in the character. At times, when the condition of the character is at its worst, the tragic flaw will influence the characterââ¬â¢s decision, and which will eventually lead to the downfall of themselves. There are many type of tragic flaws and which a character may develop more than one flaw. By having more flaws, the character will be likely to be influenced by more events, which will make the character to become more vulnerable, in the tragic state. These flaws could be found since the early myth of Jason, on a quest to find the Golden Fleece, which it also ended up in tragedy. The flaws that are most common are from being treated badly as a child or from being blinded with love. Romeo and Juliet, the famous story of the two ââ¬Ëstar crossed loversââ¬â¢ of the rivalry between the two families, ending up in tragedy. The reason behind the downfall of the couple is not from the conflict between their families, but it is actually their flaw. According to Chrisxbales papers, it describes the relationship of the two as, ââ¬Ëare not in love, but in lustââ¬â¢. There are many flaws between the two characters, combination of immaturity and stubbornness. It could be observed that the two characters rushes into things, such as the first encounter of the two. Romeo says,à ââ¬Å"If I profane with my unworthiest hand / This holy shrine, the gentle sin is this: / My lips, two blushing pilgrims, ready stand / To smooth that rough touch with a tender kiss. â⬠(1. 5. 92-95) The statement shows proof of how at first encounter, Romeo decides to ask Juliet for a kiss, even without knowing each other. This is an evidence of immaturity. Also the two, decides to ignore the advice given from Friar Lawrence, and which they have ended up paying the ultimate price. They also ignore the most obvious of which their relationship is not going to be well, with their family conflict. The main flaw of the Romeo and Juliet is that they are both blinded with love, making them stubborn and immature. The series of events were influenced by the flaw of the two characters, making them ending up in tragedy. Not only could that tragic flaw be observed in classic stories, but also in modern literature. An example of modern literature would be, Looking for Alaska by John Green. The story is about the life of Miles Halter after he moved to the Culver Creek School. He then narrates of the experience of being with his friends, telling the tragic ending of Alaska Young. Alaska Young was no ordinary school girl, she is the girl who pulls out pranks on everyone and which does all the bad things she is able to do. Once while the group of friends were off smoking, Alaska has stated that,â⬠You guys smoke because itââ¬â¢s fun, but I smoke to die. â⬠This introduces the first flaw of the character. She does not love or care about herself, therefore she will make choices which are bad for herself. Later on, it was then told that Alaska Young has a sad past. In her childhood, she has experienced the death of her mother, and which she was blamed by her father of killing her mother. That has created a scar in Alaska, and which she kept on blaming herself on everything that went wrong and that she was failing everyone. She was then found, dead in a car crash attempting to suicide; blaming herself on forgetting her motherââ¬â¢s anniversary. These were the tragic flaw of the character and which it all started by being mistreated in her childhood. The flaw has taken over the character and influenced her daily act. By not being conscious about what is the best choice for the people around and themselves, they would end up with a problem. By not solving the problem properly, other problem will appear. This will continue, until it has reached its worst such as death or the right decision is made. In conclusion, tragedy always ends up with the downfall of the character, which is caused by their tragic flaw. It could be seen through the examples of Romeo and Juliet, and the downfall of Alaska, in Looking for Alaska, that it all started from people around them. Families and friends are most influential on what they will grow up to be like. It is where their future and their fate are decided. By being mistreated or taught to behave badly towards others, it can cause a flaw. The flaw will be hidden in the person, until the time when the person is at a traumatic or panicking state. Each person has a different flaw, and which they may result on developing more than one flaw. As explained, these flaws will influence each person to make a wrong choice. As once stated by Mahatma Ghandi, ââ¬Å"Nobody can hurt me without my permission. â⬠Referring that no one can hurt you, unless you hurt yourself. The quote supports the flaw of the character that it is their own fault that lead to their downfall. In order to reduce the risks of the impact of the flaw of each person, it is important that they are conscious about the decision they are making. This could make the person to be able to think and choose the better choice for themselves and the people around them. Works Cited Green, John. Looking for Alaska: A Novel. Changing Business in the New Millennium free essay sample
Changing Business in the New Millennium Q#1: How does the internet illustrate the marketing concept in action? Answer: In marketing concept, delivering the products to the consumers according to their needs is the way to achieve organizational goal. Internet is doing this job nicely. Today, people want numerous number of products at the near of their hands. But the traditional form of marketing is no more suitable for consumer groups. Thatââ¬â¢s why they want easier to achieve of their needed products in one single place. With the keywords aggregation and convenience, internet has come forward to begin the new millennium of marketing concept. The internet offers almost unlimited shopping possibilities with all desired products of consumers. This enables one from anywhere around the world to get his expected items sitting at his home. One can give special order to make anything for him to the internet seller which he wonââ¬â¢t find in traditional market. Thus, in this competitive business world internet aim to do more than just blast the product messages. This helps the organizations to reach people directly and personally. By making things convenience to the customers, marketers wants to be the part of oneââ¬â¢s life. And internet is maximizing this value creating process through the whole marketing concept successfully.à Explain how department stores, shopping centers, discounters and warehouse stores created value for consumers? Answer: Department stores, shopping centers, discounters, and warehouse stores created value for consumers. Value for consumers not something just making things better but getting things easily. And all these stores stand for this convenience. Todayââ¬â¢s people want more products at one place than ever before. These shopping centers assemble an assortment of many items from different sources under one roof and make them conveniently available to consumers in a single location. These stores provide delivery of large goods across multiple price ranges and sometimes they create value by minimizing the price line. Thus, aggregating the products and making it convenience to the consumers is the creation of values throughout these retailing evolutionary stages (department stores, shopping centers, discounters, and warehouse stores). Q#3: How do internet sellers such as Priceline. com, NexTag. com, and Amazon. com create value for consumers? Contrast this value creation with that of traditional retailers in question 2. Answer: Internet sellers like Priceline. com, NexTag. com, and Amazon. com create value for consumers by making the assembly of products on the internet bazaar and thus customer can explore it easily and make a purchase decision. This opened a new era for the merchants to carry their businesses at the expectation of their customers. This is called E-commerce. These sites allow consumers to use dynamic pricing by bidding on items from a list of sellers and their suggested prices. These sites stand either for unique items (collectibles) or for non-unique items (airline tickets). The success of these online auction sites may allow lower prices for consumers. There are some difference between value creation from internet and value creation from local retailers. The main difference is in assortments of goods. Internet shopping may simply be to make larger assortments of goods available than local retailers can. The impact of dynamic pricing on the internet may not be to lower prices significantly. Waiting for goods, the lack of personal assistance, and the want of an active shopping experience are absent in online shopping but present in bodily shopping. Once the bid is accepted by sellers on online shopping, it cannot be withdrawn but it is easy in retailer shop. Q#4: How does the internet create value for goods and service producers? Answer: The internet creates value not only for consumers but also for goods and service producers. Now, a huge and increasing number of consumers are exploring the internet daily. So, the goods and service producers can do a quick and rapid survey among the consumers for a product about which product the consumers value most and which level of utility consumers want from a product and their pricing demand. Thus, they can produce a perfect value added product with the needs of customers. Q#5: Can a company like Priceline. com sell low-priced items such as groceries and telephone calls? Answer: An internet selling company like Priceline. com may sell low-priced items such as groceries and telephone calls. But these non-unique items canââ¬â¢t get rock bottom prices on the web. It takes the time for making bid and waiting for the acknowledgement of those products. But in contrast it is not a worthy one for consumer. Thus, many analysts believe that low-priced items such as groceries and telephone calls are not suitable for internet selling. Priceline. com can be the best example of adapting and perishing these sorts of servicing. They had their business of groceries and telephone calls like other items. But since it is not worth oneââ¬â¢s time and effort, Priceline. com had to perish these kinds of services from their online shopping business. So, for the time being, traditional sellers of low-priced items appear to be safe from internet competition. Q#6: How does a firm like Priceline. com exemplify the new model for connecting with customers as explained in the chapter? Answer: A firm like Priceline. com started their business with a new model for connecting with customers through the internet based business model. It is building on the success of online auction sites. At the retailing evolutionary stages, marketing intermediaries assemble an assortment of many items from numerous sources in a single location for making convenience. Consumer examines the merchandise, look at the price and make a purchase decision. But internet merchants adjust this model to a new one. Online auction sites such as priceline. com use dynamic pricing by allowing consumers to bid on items. Most of the goods offered at auction are unique items. But it can be the non-unique items also like mortgages, airline tickets. Here consumers specify the goods they want and the price they are willing to pay and then wait for the acceptance of suppliers. They are not a discount warehouse. They stands to go when one canââ¬â¢t find a published fare he lives with. So, though Priceline. com inaugurates a new business model, its operations benefits sellers most time rather than its customers. Thus, a new firm like Priceline. com entered into the market for serving its consumers through creation of values of its products with a new business model that works on internet when there is an existed model of marketing concept is continuing its value creating activities in the market.

King Essays - Cornish People, Holy Grail, Arthurian Legend
King Arthur If the name of King Arthur is mentioned, I suppose what comes to mind is not so much one person as a whole array of characters and themes, a montage so to speak. Of course we do think first of the King, the magnificent monarch of a glorified or idealized medieval realm. But we think also of his Queen, of the fair and wayward Guinevere, we think of his enchanter, Merlin, who presided over his birth, who set him on the throne, who established him there in the early and travelled days of his reign. There were the knights of the Round Table, vowed to the highest ideals of chivalry, and the greatest of them, Sir Lancelot, who, of course, has a tragic love affair with the Queen. There is another great love story, that of Tristan and Isolde, the theme of Wagner's Opera. We think of the place where these people assembled, Camelot, Arthur's magnificent, personal castle and capital and then, there are stranger things; the story of the quest for the Holy Grail, giving a spiritual dimension to the whole story and there is magic. Not only the magic of Merlin but the magic also of his strange, ambiguous student, the women, the enchantress, Morgan LaFay. And at the end is the tragedy of Arthur's downfall, his passing away at the isle of Avalon and another mystery that we do not know what really happened to him that he was said to be immortal, that one day he would return and restore the golden age in his country. Now, of course, this is all a realm of the imagination conceived by great authors in the middle ages and put in medieval garb. But perhaps few people realize what a very great realm of the imagination it is, how vast a literature this has been. In the middle ages this was the great theme of creative writing in poetry and prose. Not only in England, but preeminently in France and in Germany there were romances of Arthur. In fact, in every language of Christendom at that time. I suppose, the version we know best is the one that was composed in the 15th century. This is the great English version of the story, compiled out of earlier versions by the creative genius of a rather mysterious and cryptic figure, the knight, Sir Thomas Malory. But the story doesn't end there. The whole thing revives in the time of Queen Victoria, with Tennyson's "Idylls of the King." As a result of this great work on the Arthurian Cycle by England's Poet Laureate, the story became known to everybody. Other poems, novels and plays in our own time, and almost a rebirth of it yet again in T. H. White's novels, "The Sword and the Stone" and "The Once and Future King" and other plays and musicals and films based on these works. There are Rosemary Sutcliff, Mary Stewart, Marian Bradley, Pat Godwin and others, who have gone off on another line and tried to imagine the Britain of King Arthur as it might really have been. What I have personally been most concerned with is the background of all this, and the question, "where did it come from originally?" It's a very obvious thing to ask the straight question, "did King Arthur exist?" And in fact you cannot give a straight answer to that question; yes and no are both wrong. There were other great historical figures who became the heros of medieval legends, such as Alexander the Great and Charlemagne. We know that they existed and if somebody asks whether they did, we can say "yes" directly because we have reliable, historical records of them. But with Arthur, it is rather more difficult because the emphasis really is all on the legend, the romance. If we say "yes," that would imply that this magnificent medieval monarch existed and reigned, at some time or other, in his glorified medieval court as described as by Malory, Tennyson and the romances. Of course, he didn't. There is no such person as King Arthur, in that sense; it's quite an impossible idea. So we cannot say "yes," directly, but to say "no" is also misleading because that implies that he is completely fictitious, that he was all made up in the middle ages when these stories were first told, and that there is no sort of background or original person behind the stories, at all. That, too, is misleading. This is a puzzle, a very difficult question. The

Film review of Frank Capras Arsenic and Old Lace
Film review of Frank Capras Arsenic and Old Lace Frank Capra's 1944 classic "Arsenic and Old Lace" is a true "Black Comedy" classic. It contains all the elements need to make a black comedy work. Unlike other types of comedy Capra uses the symbiotic bond of tragedy and comedy to make this remarkable funny film. Capra's use of characterization allows us to bond closely to the players and brings up strong emotional ties which are imperative to the films success. Because Arsenic and Old Lace was originally adapted from a Broadway show it is possible to look at the differences between, a motion picture and live production and get very different opinions out of each production.Arsenic and Old Lace (film)Comedy and tragedy have a closely linked bond that is sometimes highly misunderstood, we as an audience will laugh at highly gruesome and macabre scene and laugh. Why this does happens? I don't know if that can be answered fully by anyone, but that is just the principle Capra uses in Arsenic and Old Lace. If you look at the story it is p retty sick. You have two old women killing men they think would be better of dead because they are lonely, and their mentally ill nephew who buries them in their basement. They show no remorse for what they do, and have in fact come to enjoy it. In real life is such a story was to happen we would all think how sick these women must be and then send them to the electric chair, but as we watch the movie we laugh, and think that is so funny. This has to do with the whole basis of black humor, which to me is that's funny as long as it's not happening to me.One of the other brilliant aspects of Arsenic and Old Lace is its...

Challenging Obstacle
Well the most challenging obstacle that I had to overcome was the death of my father. My life was turned upside down when it all happened. It greatly impacted me on a physical and mental level. Luckily this challenge taught me to cherish life. It even brought me closer to God and to understand that he has a plan for all of us. It pushed me to become more determined and motivated in any activity I partake in. Our family is much closer now then we were before. His death opened my eyes and my mind to accept the idea that you must live life to the fullest. Not only did it teach me to live life but it showed me how to be confident, strong, respectable to everyone and everything, and how to appreciate the little things in life. This would definitely be the hardest obstacle that I ever had to face in my life. Ever since that faithful day my views on life have changed dramatically. Now I have become more an optimistic individual. Yes, I am more optimistic because now I see the true beauty of the world that I always overlooked. When I see pictures of nature it releases a feeling of sanctity or even solace. I donââ¬â¢t take life for granted anymore, now I strongly believe that every life is precious even the pesky bugs. His leaving revealed that instead of rushing life I should stop every once in a while and take a gander at nature. Like a moment to soak it all in and embrace the true beauty that so much people fail to see. Now I live in the moment instead of worrying what the future brings. This ordeal has brought me a lot more near to God. In my prayers I learned that God needed him and that my father had fulfilled his purpose. I know it sound cliche but it is the truth and no one can tell me differently. Instead of resorting to drug I turned to God and he helped me through the pain. In a way God has taken the role of a fatherly figure and I am grateful. I go to church more often and I feel more alive and refreshed. This trial has shown me the love that God has to offer and how he will take care of you when your love ones are gone. God has become an important factor in my life after my dad died. My determination is at the highest point it could be. I have this motivation to strive to become the best I can. I do these things to make my father proud and to honor his legacy. To be honest, if my father was alive today I wouldnââ¬â¢t have fathom the idea of taking Advanced Placement courses. I would have relied on my dad to do everything for me including finding and paying for my college. Now I can proudly say that with this newfound determination I can succeed on my own. For once in my life I am actually studying and pushing myself to the limit on how much I can learn and retain. I was able to turn such a negative situation into a positive by using it to fuel my dreams. When all was finished this traumatic event created a feeling of togetherness. Our family became tighter and closer together. Now we set up family nights where it would either be Mexican night meaning we make Mexican dishes or game night where we battle it out on the Wii. On certain Saturdayââ¬â¢s we all would go out to any restaurant mostly Chiliââ¬â¢s and sit-down and talk about how our week was. In a sense we come together and evaluate our week and sometimes we even reminisce about him. It is better to remember the good times than to remember what happened that cold December night. His death brought our family together and taught individual to enjoy the times we have left on Earth because you never know when it is your time. The experience I gained was how to be confident in everything I do. I learned how to be strong in times of great distress. I now have the utmost respect for every living thing. Also, his death allowed me to see how important life is and how we must make the most of it. You always live like it is you last day and always be willing to aid those in need. My father passing away gave me lesson that I hope to pass onto my children. Seeing my father go would have to be the hardest thing that I ever had to overcome. Thanks to God I am standing here stronger than ever. Instead of using this as an excuse I am using this as fuel to empower me. This situation has impacted me physical and mental but I wonââ¬â¢t ever let it hold me down. In my heart I know that my father will never accept less so I will aim for the highest peak and ride it out to the end.
